Árpád Barabás was born in 1966 in Budapest.
He started his musical education at the Béla
Bartók Music School in Pápa, taking piano
and percussion classes (1973–1980), then
continued his studies at János Richter Music
Secondary School in Győr, taking classes in
composition, piano, oboe, and double bass class
(1980–1984). He attended the Liszt Academy of
Music in Budapest under the tutelage of Attila
Bozay, János Vajda, Emil Petrovics and Sándor
Balassa, graduating in 1990. He taught classical
composition at the Jazz Department of Liszt
Academy of Music in Budapest (1991–1993),
followed by music theory and analysis at its Music Theory Department (2003–
2011). He also taught the latter at the Debrecen University Faculty of Music
between 2013 and 2019, as well as composition at Debrecen’s Zoltán Kodály
Music Secondary School between 2012 and 2020. Since 2014, he has taught
composition at Béla Bartók Music Secondary School in Budapest. He was a
member of the Young Composers’ Group and has been a member of Artisjus
since 2009 as well as the Hungarian Composers’ Union since 2020. In 2021, he
was awarded the Erkel Prize.
