Gergely Barta was a student of composition
and music theory at the Pécs Secondary School
of Music between 1993 and 1997. He graduated
from the Liszt Academy of Music in Budapest
with three undergraduate degrees: in 2002, in
choral conducting, 2003 in church music, and
2006 in composition. Between 2002 and 2009,
he was a member of the Schola Hungarica Choir.
As a composer, he received the Zoltán Kodály
Scholarship between 2006 and 2008. In 2007,
Barta was awarded his DLA degree from the
Doctoral School of Budapest’s Liszt Academy
as a church music major. His dissertation was
entitled: The Relation Between Style and Functionality in Organ Works by Contemporary
Dutch Composers. That same year, he became a composition teacher at the same
institute, and from 2012 to 2017 he was made an assistant professor. In 2018,
he obtained his habilitation degree at the Liszt Academy of Music in Budapest.
From 2009 to 2013, he also taught at the Premontre Secondary School, Gödöllő.
Since 2009, he has been a member of the Premontrei Cantorate. From 2005 to
2008, he conducted research on the Central European repertoire of the cantus
planus multiplex, which received support from the Hungarian Academy of
Sciences.
